CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS AND PARTICIPANTS [Jul. 26th, 2010|01:29 pm]
For Presenters of Alternative Sexuality Topics

lil_laurel
We are thrilled to announce that the Transcending Boundaries Conference for 2010 is accepting proposals for presentations! This year's theme is "Intersections." In keeping with the theme, our emphasis will be on programming that appeals to the different demographic groups present at our conference; presentations that have something for everyone in attendance. We hope to look at the intersections of our identities and communities- bisexual, pansexual, transgender, genderqueer, intersex, kink, polyamorous and others- especially how we can learn from one another and work together to strengthen our individual communities, as well as our larger shared
community and goals.

Transcending Boundaries, Inc. began in 2001 as an organization and conference for those who blur the lines of sex, gender, and sexual orientation. We are seeking presenters and program participants. This year's conference will include a variety of programming formats ranging from traditional informational lectures to panels to workshops to performances and everything in between. Whether you're an experienced presenter or interested in leading a group for the first
time, we'd love to consider your proposal.

All time slots for presentations will be 1 hour and 15 minutes. The Transcending Boundaries Conference 2010 will take place November 19-21, 2010 in Worcester, MA. The deadline for submission is August 15, 2010.

We are especially interested in presentations that address one of (or intersect) the following themes:
* Issues related to those who blur the lines of sex, gender, sexual and relationship orientations, including the Bisexual, Pansexual, Transgender, Genderqueer, Intersex, Kinky/BDSM, Polyamory and other allied communities. (If your community is not listed here
but you think should it be, this is the perfect opportunity to educate the larger community through a program proposal!) 101 and Intro level topics are specifically encouraged.
* Activism
* Relationships, Families and Parenting
* Spirituality and Religion
* Interactions with Professionals and Health Care Issues
* Writing/Creative arts
* Identity and Community

Please see our website at http://www.transcendingboundaries.org/program-submission. You can also view the program from our 2009 conference at http://www.transcendingboundaries.org/attic/2009/workshops/.

The deadline for submitting proposals is August 15, 2010, but please don’t wait until the last minute! If you have an idea for a presentation, please send it to us well in advance to assist us in getting a head start on creating an exciting and compelling conference program.

You may submit a proposal at http://www.transcendingboundaries.org/program-submission

ShibariCon 2008 Class Schedule Posted! [Apr. 1st, 2008|08:25 pm]

ShibariCon 2008, Chicago, IL
May 23 - 26, 2008

Hey!  I would highly encourage everyone to head over to the ShibariCon site, as the class schedule has finally been posted!  We have some amazing presenters this year, including old favorites like Mark Yu, Jim Duvall, Tatu, Lochai and Mark of DV8 House.  We are also excited to welcome Lee Harrington, Jay Wiseman, Scott Smith and Max of bondagelessons.com, who were not on the teaching roster last year.  These presenters are a small sample of the over 35 presenters that will be teaching a myriad of classes for everyone from the greenest beginner to the seasoned bondage rigger.

In addition to learning opportunities, there will be special events hosted by Graydancer, a tea hosted by Tatu, 3 nights of play, a pre-con trip to Anderson Japanese Gardens hosted by Tatu & Shevah and lots of fabulous vendors selling everything from rope & toys to corsets & shoes.  We even have a wedding taking place at the event this year.  2008 will be a very special year for ShibariCon.

This is definitely going to be an amazing year that you do not want to miss.  Registration is only $185 for 4 days of fun, learning and, of course, plenty of rope.  It is being held at the beautiful Hyatt Regency O'Hare, which is easily accessible by both public transportation and car, along with a free shuttle running from O'Hare International Airport right to their front door.  They have also graciously offered ShibariCon attendees a discounted room rate, so get yours before they are gone!

All in all, I am really excited for this year.  Great classes, great hotel, great people - what more could you want out of an event?

Tying together classes.... [Mar. 26th, 2008|10:38 am]
For Presenters of Alternative Sexuality Topics

elkor
[mood |thoughtfulthoughtful]

This past weekend margoeve and I presented at Dark Odyssey: Winter Fire. Our class was "Effective Flirting", a class geared to providing people with the fundamentals behind flirting techniques in such a way that they can could develop their own style of flirting.

Other classes offered at the event were "How to influence kinksters and win playdates" and "Why can't I meet someone?" two other classes that were along the vein of improving social interaction between people in the scene.

The thing that struck me about these classes is that they are all in a similar vein, but with different focuses. Often I have seen tracks of classes offered by a single presenter. Or topics in the same family, but disparate enough that there isn't really a lot of overlap.

What I really wanted to do was to have a caucus with the other presenters and talk about what our respective classes would be covering. To try to work on developing hooks or tie ins between the classes so we could build on each other. Also, to ensure that we were going to give the maximum bang for the attendees buck.

There are few things more frustrating (to me) than going to two different classes on similar topics and have the material be 90% the same. While the 10% that is different is useful, I always leave with the sense that the presenters could have gotten more into the class if they weren't repeating what the other person had said. Some repetition is good. Some material should be repeated as many times as possible to make sure it gets out there (safety information).

So, what I want to know from you is:
* If you were contacted by another presenter at an event you were both presenting at who wanted to coordinate classes, would you be willing to do that?

* What level of detail do you think is appropriate to share during coordination? Outlines? Personal notes?

* How would you look to divide up duplicate topics?

* For those of you that also solicit presenters, would you want presenters to tie their classes together?

* What do you see as some obstacles to making this work effectively?

* What advantages or disadvantages do you see?

How often do you attend presentations of a class you teach being taught by other people and what do you do when you're there?

Example:
You teach a class on Flogging.
There is a class on Flogging being taught by Person X this weekend.

What is your basis for deciding whether to go or not?
If you don't go, why not?

If you do go:
* What do you hope to get from the class?
* Do you introduce yourself as someone who also teaches the class? Do you do so before or after the class? (Assume they don't know you, otherwise)
* What do you do it someone presents information you disagree with, but is a matter of opinion? (i.e. "suede floggers are better than bull floggers")

* What do you do if someone presents flat out wrong information? ("It's impossible to transmit disease through a flogger used on multiple people" or "No, a 100% bleach solution won't hurt leather at all")

In general, how do you think the majority of presenters handle the subject? (i.e. better, worse or comparable)
